Mission
Academic research hub for MND/ALS (research-only; not a patient clinic itself, but inseparable from Beaumont's clinical service). Lead: Prof. Orla Hardiman (cross-appointed Beaumont). World-class research strengths: clinical evaluation, epidemiology, neuropsychology, genetics, brain imaging, neural engineering, neural electrophysiology (MRI + EEG) Notable discoveries & publications: ANG gene involvement in ALS; shared genetic basis between MND and schizophrenia (published 2019–2021 with major international coverage); "The epidemiology of ALS: a conspiracy of genes, environment and time" (Al-Chalabi & Hardiman, *Nat Rev Neurol* 2013 — a foundational ALS epidemiology review cited >1,000 times). Irish ALS/MND Register — continuously operated since 1990s by Hardiman group. Underpins population-based epidemiology; all-Ireland collaboration with Belfast's Donaghy, Patterson, Kee group has produced joint North-South publications (e.g., Donaghy et al. 2010, 2022). PRECISION-ALS (2022–): €10M Irish-led pan-European programme; integrates data from TRICALS partner sites into a single AI-enabled platform for precision ALS medicine.
